The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced this week that Diamond Shruumz brand products are still on store shelves.
This comes over a month after federal health authorities issued a warning about hospitalizations linked to the company’s “microdosing” chocolate bars, cones, and gummies.
Recalled Diamond Shruumz Products Still Available
In an update released late Tuesday, the FDA stated, “FDA is aware that recalled Diamond Shruumz-brand products are still on the shelves at several smoke/vape shops, and at retailers that sell hemp-derived products.”
This ongoing investigation now includes 28 states.
Hospitalizations Linked to Diamond Shruumz Edibles
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that consuming Diamond Shruumz “edibles” is now linked to at least 69 illnesses and 36 hospitalizations.
This is an increase from the previous week’s figures of 58 illnesses and 30 hospitalizations.
FDA Issues Warning
The FDA warned, “Consumers should not purchase or consume any Diamond Shruumz-brand products.
If you have seen a store continuing to sell recalled Diamond Shruumz-brand products, you can report this information to FDA.”
Severe Hospitalizations with Intensive Care
According to the CDC, some hospitalizations have been severe, with several patients requiring intensive care.
Some patients even needed intubation.
Children Among Those Affected
Among those affected are multiple children.
Additionally, the death of an adult in North Dakota is being investigated for a possible connection to the products.
Raise Awareness of Diamond Shruumz Recall
The FDA indicated it is “working with the National Association of Convenience Stores and the National Smoke Shop Association to increase awareness” about the recall.
This recall involves all Diamond Shruumz products from last month.
Sales Not Monitored
A spokesperson from the National Association of Convenience Stores confirmed that the group notified its members about the recall last month.
However, they do not monitor the sales of the product.
Number of States with Remaining Products Unclear
It remains unclear how many states have found the product still available on store shelves.
The FDA spokesperson has not yet responded to requests for additional information.
“Serious Illness” Identified
Washington recently became the 28th state to report an illness linked to the product.
This follows local health officials’ identification of a “serious illness” in a resident associated with the products.
Toxic Levels of Muscimol
Prophet Premium Blends, the manufacturer of Diamond Shruumz products, has attributed the hospitalizations to “toxic levels” of muscimol.
This chemical is derived from mushrooms.
FDA Testing Reveals Hidden Ingredients
The FDA’s testing last month also revealed additional hidden ingredients, including psilacetin, sometimes known as “synthetic shrooms.”
The tests also identified derivatives of kava.
