Several sausage products have been recalled from a company based in Oregon over fears of unknown allergens.
Routine testing uncovered the hidden ingredient that may cause a serious illness in many people.
The Company
Taylor’s Sausage Inc. is a family-owned company based in Cave Junction, Oregon.
The company focuses on selling high-quality jerky and smoked sausage that has been manufactured in their processing plant.
The Recall
After thorough testing and a full investigation by the Food and Drug Administration, nine major allergens were discovered in one of the company’s sausage products.
More than 74 pounds of the ready-to-eat Landjaeger sausage product was found to contain an allergen that was not added to the label. Due to the inclusion of the dangerous item, the company was told to issue a recall on the item.
What Is the Product?
The product at the center of the recall is the “TAYLOR’S Sausage Hot LANDJAEGER” and is sold in a pack of 12.
The sausage has the code 23342-2, an establishment number of 6172 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture mark of inspection. Also, the best before date is December 8, 2025. Packages were sold in Oregon and California.
Look Inside Your Cupboard and Fridge
The company notes that the products come wrapped in clear plastic packaging with a red and yellow label bearing the brand and product name.
The Food Safety and Inspection Service has said that the products may be inside cupboards or fridges and urges consumers to throw away the product or return it to where it was purchased.
Soy Allergen
One of the major allergens discovered inside of the sausage is soy, which the FDA knows has one of the 14 major allergens.
All ingredients in a product are legally required to be labelled on a product so that consumers know exactly what they’re ingesting. On top of that, there are dozens of common allergens and even more rare allergens that consumers need to be aware of to avoid unnecessary reactions.
Other Unlabelled Ingredients
Other FDA-designated allergens besides soy are wheat, milk, tree nuts, peanuts, sesame, egg, shellfish, and fish.
Government agencies note that the nine most common allergens must be labelled on all products. Otherwise, a health and safety risk is present for consumers.
Symptoms of an Allergic Reaction
There are many common symptoms of an allergic reaction when someone ingests something they’re allergic to.
Many people could experience itching, rashes, hives, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, swelling in the throat and vocal cords, coughing or wheezing and difficulty breathing.
Anaphylaxis
In rare cases, people suffering from serious allergies can experience anaphylaxis.
Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening medical emergency in which a body’s immune system overreacts to an allergen.
Symptoms of Serious Allergy Attacks
When a person experiences anaphylaxis, they need to be rushed to the closest emergency room or urgent care.
Symptoms of this condition include throat swelling, difficulty breaking, a sudden drop in blood pressure and loss of consciousness.
Common Reason for Recalling Food
One of the most common reasons for recalling food is undisclosed allergens.
The FDA and other food agencies take allergens very seriously, as people can become sick and even die as a result.
No One Sick So Far
Thankfully, no known allergy attacks have been associated with the affected sausage.
